How We Built This
The Gas Index was built entirely using Claude Code. Every line of code, database migration, API integration, and deployment was done through a single conversational interface.
It combines four data sources: EIA weekly survey data (1990-present), Google Places API for 170,483+ stations, AI voice agents that call stations via Twilio, and crowdsourced submissions.
Built by husband-duo AI engineer Matt Cortland and AI researcher John Fleming at Prime Directive AI.
Methodology
Station prices: Google Places API
AI calls: ElevenLabs voice agents via Twilio. All calls identify the caller as AI.
Historical data: U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) weekly survey, 1990 to present
Disclaimer
Prices change frequently and may not reflect current pump prices. We recommend calling ahead to confirm the price before making a trip. The Gas Index is provided for informational purposes only and we accept no liability for decisions made based on this data. If you work at a station and anything here is wrong, use the Contribute button.
The Gas Index is a website with no premises, so there are no opening hours, and you can email us any time. We don't take calls from AI agents, so please email press@gasindex.ai instead. Our full rules for AI agents are at https://gasindex.ai/voice.txt.
