A transparent look at the ownership of every major gas station brand in the United States. This is the research behind our ownership badges and state-level ownership breakdowns.
Ownership is determined by tracing the ultimate parent company of each brand through public filings, SEC records, and corporate disclosures. “American-owned” means the parent company is headquartered in and primarily controlled from the United States. “Foreign-owned” means the ultimate parent is headquartered outside the US, even if the brand originated in America (e.g. 7-Eleven was founded in Texas but is now owned by Seven & i Holdings of Japan). Independent stations with no chain affiliation are not counted in ownership statistics. Franchise ownership (individual franchise operators) is not tracked — we track brand-level corporate ownership only.
